What's up? I'm Roxanne Grace, the host of the Conversation. Today we are talking to evangelist Scott McNamara. You're not going to want to miss it, so sit back, relax, and enjoy the conversation. What happens when an ex-boy band member that was on the verge of death from addiction gets brought to a local church by its atheist friends? Well, in this case, yet a radical transformation that sparks a global movement. Today's guest is an international street evangelist. He's been featured in the documentary Finger of God 2, and he's the visionary founder behind Jesus at the Door and King's Army. His name is Scott McNamara. And on today's episode, Scott shares how you can be on the wrong road believing in the right God. We discuss why bad things happen to good people, and we're gonna hear about how Scott shared Jesus on an airplane. You're not gonna want to miss anything in this conversation, so let's dive in. What's up, Scott? How are you?
SPEAKER_05What's up, Rox?
SPEAKER_00I'm so excited for our conversation today. I mean, you're one of my very favorite evangelists. I've learned so much from you. I love your beautiful family, your ministry, and of course the heart behind it all. You guys are just awesome.
SPEAKER_05I love you guys too.
SPEAKER_00We usually begin with a series of personality type questions. Don't think too much about it. Just kind of respond with whatever comes naturally and helps us really get to know you better. First question. What is your favorite color?
SPEAKER_05Red.
SPEAKER_00Nice. What's your favorite food?
SPEAKER_05Favorite food. Favorite food is uh is I'm from I'm from UK, you know, so we have uh like a Sunday roast dinner. So it's like uh I guess the closest thing would be your Thanksgiving dinner. But we have we have that like on a weekly basis, which is my favorite dinner. We can't really get it here. We have a bunch of stuff that you guys don't eat, so I really miss that. That's my favorite meal, yeah.
SPEAKER_00Sounds delicious. What is your favorite word?
SPEAKER_05Favorite word, uh go.
SPEAKER_00Come on, let's go. That definitely comes through your life, Scott. If you could time travel, where would you go and win?
SPEAKER_05I probably want to go. I tell you what I'd love to go. I love to go to early church days, but specifically, I I'm really I'm really uh you know enamored by the whole Ananias and Saul becomes Paul. You know, I think that's one of the most beautiful church moments in church history. So that moment when Saul becomes Paul, the scales fall off his eyes, he gets baptized. That would be a kind of that sort of scene, that kind of time frame. And then Paul launches into what he does.
SPEAKER_00Next question. What makes you sad?
SPEAKER_05What makes me sad on a on a deep level? I would say um, you know, the the kind of line of work that I'm in is seeing people who are who are in misery, um, knowing that people are dying, uh, and I can't sometimes, you know, you can't reach them, hearing just tragic stories of people ending their own lives, um, you know, people, yeah, just people dying without Christ and knowing from my life, knowing what happens to people who die without Jesus. So that's a that's a real burden for me and uh something that definitely pains me. And and then not only that, but to see people who are living in in misery but not choosing to accept Jesus, knowing that you know that he could change everything for them.
SPEAKER_00That's a very thought-provoking answer. Thank you. What makes you happy? And I feel like I already know what you're gonna say.
SPEAKER_05Um, yeah, and I mean, you know, these these answers for me, I mean, obviously you know me, but people who don't know me, it might sound like I'm trying to give the spiritual, the pat spiritual answer, but obviously, genuinely for me, this is how I live my life. So, yeah, I mean, for me, seeing people set free and come into a knowledge of of Jesus and relationship with him, which fortunately I get to see on a regular basis. So even last night I got to see that in in somebody's life. So uh seeing people set free and come to the knowledge of his love in their life.
SPEAKER_00This is the last question for our personality questions. And Scott, we know that you hear the voice of the Lord in so many different ways and often, but if you could hear the audible voice of God today, what question would you ask him? I know I'm totally putting you on the spot right now.
SPEAKER_05These are good questions. You're rocking it, girl. Um, what what would I what would I want him to answer? I don't know, because I think like I like to live, I don't like to live too far. Like I wouldn't want to know too much, you know, because I think it keeps you dependent on on the spirit. You know, I I find the Lord gives you the next chunk of vision, um, which is you know what's happening in our lives right now. The Lord's giving us the next kind of chunk of of the next few years of what we're gonna be doing. But I don't think I would want too many details because you know, it could rob me uh keeping my attention and my focus on the Lord daily for that for that kind of direction and sustenance. So so yeah, I don't think there's anything specific uh really that I would uh I I guess I would just ask for to hear the Lord's voice more. You know, I I love it, it's kind of my favorite thing to hear the voice of the Lord. So I'd probably just ask, not specifically like that ground uh an answer, but more kind of consistently hear your whisper.
SPEAKER_00Amen. Great answer. Let's shift gears and talk about what the Bible says in Matthew chapter 28, verse 19. It says, Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. And in Mark chapter 16, verse 15, it says, He said to them, Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation. It's the great commission. Every person that calls themselves a believer in Christ is called to do it. Let's talk about it.
SPEAKER_05Amen. Yes, we are. The Great Commission, like you just referenced, wasn't given to evangelists, but Jesus actually gave it to disciples. So anyone who's a disciple, anyone who's a blood born believer, follower of Christ, you have that commission in your life to go and make those disciples, yeah.
SPEAKER_00So, practically speaking, how do we do that at school in our nine to five jobs in everyday life? How do we do it?
SPEAKER_05Well, I think the biggest thing is for individuals, you know, to in order to bear fruit, you know, we're all called to bear fruit. Mean uh one of my favorite verses in the Bible is John 15, verse 8, where it says that when we bear much fruit, we are true disciples and we bring glory to our Father in heaven. So I think for all of us as believers, as disciples, we we want to bring glory to our Father in heaven. But in order to do that, we have to bear much fruit. So how do we bear much fruit? And uh I think you know that's where the body of Christ has been gifted, uh, where the Lord has gifted um certain individuals and put them in kind of in charge, if you like, to carry an office. So whether it be uh prophetic, whether it be you know uh as an apostle, as a pastor, the five-fold gifting. So I think the evangelists and those who carry the office of an evangelist encourage and lead the way for the church to follow so that everyday people, like you say, you know, whether you're a doctor, a nurse, or a dentist, or you work in Starbucks, you know, how how do we know how to bear fruit? And I think the evangelists, those that carry the office of an evangelist, should pioneer the way not just to um not just to show people like all their great stories and say, Hey, look what I did, equip you to do it for the equipping of the saints is why we uh embody the office of whatever gift that is. So for me, that's kind of something I'm passionate about is equipping everyday believers with the tools to bear fruit. But the main thing that we need to do in order to do that is um is to know the Holy Spirit, know him personally in that way. You know, you can know him in your in your quiet time, in your Bible to Bible reading, you can know him in your prayer closet. But knowing him in the harvest fields of life is a different thing. So we're trying to equip people to get to know the spirit in partnership, get to know his presence, how he moves in the harvest fields of life, which means just in your everyday life, in your sphere of influence. And that's why uh we have Jesus at the door, which we give to people to help them do, do just that.
SPEAKER_00You do exactly that, Scott. You're equipping so many others. And yes, the go in the Great Commission is widely interpreted by scholars and theologians as meaning as you are going or as you go throughout your day, throughout your day, throughout our day, we are to share Jesus in words, and we can do it in action as well, and we help others grow in knowledge of him. So intentionally mission-minded during our normal day activities. Oh, and the original Greek is described as an ongoing action rather than just like a single one-time. So we're to be intentionally mission-minded every day in our everyday lives. And I absolutely love Scott that you share so many testimonies and examples of what you're doing in your daily life. It really does encourage and inspire so many others to do the same thing to go out and share the gospel.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, 100%. Yeah. I mean, you know, obviously that there's power in testimony, there's power in people's lives that are being changed, but we're trying to show everyday believers that they can do it. So our kind of highlight stories that we focus on tend to be the people who uh didn't look like they were likely uh candidates, you know, the underdogs, people who, you know, uh, I mean, we've recently just in this past couple of months, we've seen people. There's a gentleman who was like 54 years a believer, uh, never led someone to the Lord. I trained the church this weekend, 25-year Christian, uh 25-plus year Christian, never led one soul to the Lord, and he got on Saturday. So, you know, they're the people that we celebrate. There's another lady there. We have this when I train, we have this thing where you stand up when I call your number. Number one is knee knocking nervous, and number 10 is Jesus. You know, we have this little joke and we're like, stand up, I'm gonna call one to ten, you stand where you feel that you fit with that number. And the lady stood at number one, and she's like, I'm nervous. But she came back at the end of the afternoon and she said, Look, I was so nervous, but I just went for it and I got to lead this girl to the Lord. And so, you know, for us, uh as well as the people who who feel confident, we're really honing in on the ones who say, I can't do it, yeah, I'm not qualified, because we believe that that's a secret army that is waiting to arise uh and to uh the Lord wants to use in these end-time revivals, you know.
SPEAKER_00No, I love what you're doing, how you're showing all believers, no matter how nervous they may be, and it's true, it can it can be scary, but showing everybody that they can share the gospel. And um, we have the best evangelism partner. You can't get a better evangelism partner. We have the Holy Spirit. Scott, I saw a video that we definitely need to talk about. You were sharing the gospel to passengers on an airplane. We have a short clip we're gonna share right now. Here is Scott sharing the gospel on a plane. Check this out.
SPEAKER_04The Bible says if we invite him, he's gonna come. So I'd love to uh to pray. So I know it's kind of spontaneous, but if there's anybody that would like to open that door to Jesus, if you mean it in your heart, I believe you will be a prayer. So I'm just gonna say a prayer. And if everybody everybody anybody wants to do like a stack holding to work, I open the door of my heart. I say sorry for my sin. I choose to follow you and make you the Lord of my life. Fill me with your Holy Spirit in Jesus' name. If any of you guys pray that prayer, I'd love to chat with you. I'm gonna be out around here for a while. I hope to have people connected and move forward on that journey. But thank you all so much for your time. God bless you. Hey, thanks. You know, good words of inspiration are always nice to have you.
SPEAKER_00How cool is that? Let's talk about it.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, I mean, honestly, for me to do that, the reason I did that, it wasn't necessarily even about you know what's going to happen. I mean, that kind of environment is difficult. You know, in terms of like bearing fruit, because you know, you're moving around, people are from different places. So I'm really into making disciples. So that's a kind of difficult environment to do that. However, the gospel, you know, when the gospel's preached, things happen, things shift. But the rip the main reason I did I did that was for me. Because, you know, I have this little phrase, wherever I get comfortable, I'm looking to get uncomfortable. Because you don't grow when you're comfortable, grow when you're out of your depth, you know. Um, so you know, if you look at Peter in Luke chapter 5, when he went fishing all night without Jesus, didn't catch any fish, Jesus said go back, uh, and then he he had too many fish to catch, but he had to go deep uh in order to catch those fish, he had to go deeper, you know. And often we don't want to go deeper uh because we're scared. So I'm always looking for those opportunities. This makes me nervous, this makes me a little on edge right now, but I'm gonna do it because I know that it's gonna it's gonna bring me a level of freedom that I wouldn't have found without that. So um so that's kind of why I step into those moments, you know.
SPEAKER_00You know, that is exactly why we need to keep friends just like you in our lives. You know, we all need to be challenged to step out of our comfort zones. I love it. Did anyone on the plane seem upset about what you were doing or or seriously oppose you sharing the gospel?
SPEAKER_05It's kind of interesting because you would think maybe there would be some opposition. I mean, I the first time I did it was with a friend of mine and he stood up and he got asked to sit sit down. They did ask him to sit down. Um so I I haven't had uh any any issues with it so far. Um, yeah, I mean it's it's been okay, you know, for me. I just think people can really they they kind of catch the light. It depends how you approach it. I mean, I was with uh one of my friends who's with me, um, always kind of laughing. He said, I'm gonna steal your line. I I I opened, um, it was my friend who was videoing, but she was like, I'm gonna steal your line. There's a couple of those with, and they were saying, Because uh I basically said, Hey, I'm a missionary from Ireland to America, you know, I'm an ambassador uh of Christ, and I'm um, you know, I'm I'm uh I forgot what I said, I'm I'm uh uh appointed of the gospel or something anyway. And uh and I kind of just came in with that official line, a bit more official, saying, you know, I'm here so people could know this is where it's coming from. I'm not on an agenda, I'm here because I care about I said God has not done with the US, I believe. And so that was kind of my opening line into doing. I think people can hear if there's a genuine love in your heart and in your in your voice. So, you know, hopefully that's kind of that makes a difference.

First John 4.8 tells us that God is love. I mean, he is the very definition of love. He doesn't just operate in love or possess love. I mean, he's love himself. And that brings me to my next question. It's probably a question that you've gotten a lot. Why do you think bad things happen to good people?
SPEAKER_05Yeah, actually, we had a we had a guy ask this this very question yesterday. We're put we're praying out in the community, me and one of my uh my leaders, and we were a young gentleman he came across and he basically started asking these questions. He's like, you know, it it kind of good bad things happen to good people, you know, it doesn't make any sense. And why is this? And so, you know, I just kind of explained to him how, you know, you know, we're in in life, you know, there's there's a you know, there's a war going on, but you know, what sin when sin came into the world that brought corruption and pollution, um you know, our bodies are dying every day, this world is dying, you know. We look in the mirror, we're one, you know, from last week we're one week older. Um, you know, you know, we're not dying, we're not dying of old, we don't die of old age, really. We die because of sin. You know, sin is killing, sin is like a cancer in the body, and it's killing every human being. Um, however, Jesus broke into humanity and he said on the cross, he said, I'm gonna change the eternal outcome. So your bodies will still die, but your spirits can live forever, your life can uh you can live forever with me, but I'll be with you in the in that brokenness in the world that's broken. I'm gonna be with you holding you together in the middle of that. So, you know, there's a war at work between, you know, the devil is real, God is real, and there's a war at work. But if we ever question uh the love of God, you know, all we've got to do is look at the cross because Jesus died for us when we were still sinners, the Bible tells us. And we've all sinned, you know, we've all done things we shouldn't have done willingly, but that makes us guilty, you know. And when I was explaining to this young man, I said, God has a just uh God is just, and you know, like the the in the world we have a judicial system. If somebody commits a crime, you want to you want to see them punished. It's called justice. The justice of God is that the wages of sin is death. So that means if you commit sin, the punishment for that is death, death eternal, you know, and not just your body but your soul will go to hell and and pay for that price. However, Jesus uh loved you so much that he became guilty so that you could become innocent. So he came and he said, I know you're guilty and I have to punish somebody. I can't let somebody off. You know, God can't say, Hey, well, he did this, let's just let that one slide. That would not be just if you stand before a judge and you say, Hey, I broke into somebody's car, and the other guy says I murdered somebody, but you go to prison for murder, but you broke into the car, we'll let that one slide. That would not be just. And anyone who commits a sin, you're guilty. So you have to be punished. However, Jesus said, I love you so much, I don't want you to be punished. I will come and be punished for you so that you can go free. Imagine the judge there with his cloak and his big wig, and he he stand, you stand before him and he says, Did you commit the crime? And if you're honest, you'll admit that we've all committed crimes of sin in our life. And you say, Yeah, I did that. And then the judge hits the hammer down and he says, Guilty. But then he takes his wig off and he takes his cloak off. He walks down from the throne in the courtroom and he says, You go free, I will take your punishment. And this is what Jesus did. He came down from heaven and he said, I'm gonna take the punishment you deserve, except the punishment was death. And Jesus took it so that you could be free. So he's already done that for you, and that's all you need to know, how much he loves you. Now you've just got to accept what he's already done.
SPEAKER_00Thank you for that. One more question, and then we're gonna close. Do you think a lot of people right now are making Jesus their savior and not their Lord? And what would you say the difference is?
SPEAKER_05Yeah, I think I think people have been doing that for many years. And I know, you know, in America, I know there's a I think maybe there's more of a culture of that. There's a lot of people, there's a lot of churchgoers, there's a lot of people who are ticking the box and say, hey, you know, you know, Jesus is real, I believe in him. Let's tick that Sunday box. But they go out six days a week uh or or even six and a half and live uh you know, live the life that they want to live, really, and not really following uh the Lord, you know. I have a phrase I say you can be on the wrong road believing in the right God. But the truth of it is that one day you stand before the Lord, and there's only two roads. Jesus said there's a wide road, takes you to hell, or a narrow one leads you to life, and only few find it, Jesus said. So you can be on the wrong road. You can you can even have a Bible under your arm and say the right, you know, Christianese language, use the right Christianese language, but you're going to the wrong destination point. You need to turn around and change direction. So I think the difference is is exactly you know what I mentioned is that the difference between him being Lord is that you're on the path in relationship, following him, and not on the wrong road, believing in the right God. So it's important that we turn, we get on the right path, and we make Jesus the shepherd of our lives. Not just the, you know, many sheep, they know the shepherd exists, but not all of the sheep follow the shepherd. And uh it is down to it it is down to following, is where our lives are changed. Jesus never said to his disciples, come and believe in me. He said, Come follow me. You see, even the devil believes in God, but it will not help him. You can believe all you want, but you need to follow. It is only in the following that our lives are changed.
SPEAKER_00To close, there are people listening right now that do not yet know Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. Or maybe there's ones listening that used to know him, but they walked away from him. Could you lead them to the Lord?
SPEAKER_05Yeah, yeah, for sure. Yeah, I would love to pray. I mean, what I would say to you guys watching right now, if there's anyone in that uh position, I would I would ask you this if Jesus were here right now in front of you, if he was in front of you in your living room, in your bedroom, wherever you may be at work, wherever you are watching this, if Jesus were in front of you right now, with his hands, with his hand held out to you, that hole in his hand for the nail that he hung, that was placed in his hand, where he hung for you, would you open the door of your heart to let him in? If you say yes, then I want to pray for you right now that you're gonna feel his presence right now. So, Holy Spirit, I ask you for every individual who has a heart that is open to you right now in this moment. I ask you to change the atmosphere where they are right now, make your love real to them. I pray for a tangible touch of your spirit, of your presence in their bodies right now. Let them feel waves of your love washing over them. I pray for every chain to be broken. We come against every stronghold of Satan over their lives, every line, every whisper that would rob them from being free, every uh voice of doubt right now. We silence and we just pray, Holy Spirit, that you'd reveal the depths of your love to them in this moment, Lord. Awaken their hearts, awaken their spirits to feel that love. Thank you that you're real, that you're resurrected, that you're alive, you're not on a statue, Lord, you're not in a book, but you're actually living. So we can experience the touch of your spirit. So right now, let them feel it and let them feel your goodness in the name of Jesus. We pray. So if you were there and you felt something in your heart right now, if you felt something in that moment and you would believe that that is Jesus, there's only one condition. Like I said, you're leaving the road you're on where you're in charge of your life and you're willing to turn. You're you're willing to leave the road that you're a sheep right now with no shepherd, and you're saying, I want to turn and I want to follow you. Jesus, let I want you to be my shepherd. I want you to be the one who leads me. If you want that, and you have to want it because uh, you know, it's not a gift. It's not sorry, it's not a ticket to heaven. It is a gift, but it's not a ticket to heaven, it's not something we take and then continue the road we're on. We have to turn, accept. Accept this gift, turn and begin in a new direction. So if you want that, then you just pray with me. The only requirement is that you mean it in your heart. Because talk is true. We say things every day that we don't really mean. But if you really mean this from your heart, then uh Jesus will come in and this relationship can begin for you. So just echo these words. Just say, Dear Lord Jesus, I open the door of my heart and I let you in. I say sorry for my sin. I choose to follow you and make you the Lord of my life. Fill me with your Holy Spirit. In your name I pray. Amen.
